O que é um Race Line?
Bitcoin crashes from 47,000 to 16,500 between the start of 2022 and 2023, and on a static chart that's just two dots with a steep line between them. An animated line chart plays that crash instead of showing it: each series draws itself in from left to right as time advances, so you watch Bitcoin fall and Ethereum climb rather than comparing two endpoints on a frozen image. By the finish you have the same chart a static export would give you, except the viewer sat through the actual event instead of being handed the aftermath.
This matters most when lines cross. A static chart with five overlapping series is genuinely hard to read at the exact point two lines swap position; your eye has to hunt for the pixel where it happened. Date
One row per point in time, oldest first. Each remaining column is a line.
The sheet is wide, not long: one row per point in time, one column per line. If your data has a separate row for every series-and-date pair (the 'long' shape most exports and databases use), pivot it so each series gets its own column before uploading. Most spreadsheet tools call this a pivot table.
Rows need to be in chronological order, and the date column has to actually parse as a date (2024-01-01, Jan 2024, and 2024 all work). Because a line implies a continuous path between points, aim for at least six to eight time steps: three or four rows will animate, but the draw-in looks closer to a straight segment than a real trend. More rows, evenly spaced where possible, make the motion read as smoother.

Asset and price history
Crypto, stocks, commodities: anything with a volatile price series benefits from watching the swings happen in sequence rather than reading a flat static chart where the 2022 crash and the 2024 recovery look equally calm. The Bitcoin numbers on this page are a good example of exactly that flattening problem.
Adoption and growth curves
User counts, market penetration, vaccination rates: S-curves and exponential ramps read as motion far more clearly than as a static line, especially when you're comparing how fast two or three things grew relative to each other.
Series that cross over
When one thing overtakes another partway through your timeline, a competitor's stock passing yours, a new platform overtaking an old one, the animation puts that crossover moment front and center instead of burying it in a static image.
Continuous metrics over a long stretch of time
Line charts assume the value in between two points is meaningful, so this template works best with genuinely continuous data, daily prices, monthly readings, rather than a handful of disconnected snapshots.

A single flat, unchanging series
If nothing much happens over your time range, there's no motion worth watching. A static chart says the same thing in less time and lets the reader zoom in on their own.
Category comparisons with no time axis
If your rows are products or regions rather than dates, there's nothing to animate left to right. Use a bar or column chart instead; Race Line needs a genuine time dimension to draw against.
You need readers to pull exact values
A moving line is great for shape, bad for precision. Nobody's pausing the video to read '16,500' off the y-axis. Pair the export with a table or static chart if exact figures matter.
