O que é um Arc Map?

An arc map joins pairs of places on a map with curved lines. Each row of your data is one route, with a start point and an end point, and the curve between them is drawn along the shortest path across the globe, which is why flight routes bow toward the poles. Thickness and colour can carry a value such as passengers or tonnes, and hovering an endpoint isolates the routes that touch it. It answers a question a shaded map cannot: not how much is in each place, but how places are connected to each other.

  • Your data describes movement between places

    Flights, shipping lanes, trade between countries, migration, submarine cables. If every row has a start and an end, an arc map is the natural picture.

  • The connections matter more than the places

    A reader should see which hubs are busiest and which regions are linked at all. Arcs make hubs and gaps obvious in a way a table of pairs never will.

  • You have routes in several groups

    A filter control lets a viewer isolate one group, such as one airline or one trade bloc, so a crowded map becomes a set of readable ones.

  • Routes cross the Pacific or the dateline

    Arcs wrap correctly across the antimeridian, so a Tokyo to Los Angeles route draws as one curve rather than a line streaking across the whole map.

  • You have one value per region

    That is a choropleth map. Arcs need two ends per row, and shading whole countries by a rate is a different job.

  • You only have single points

    Plotting where things are, with no connection between them, calls for a marker map rather than arcs with no second end.

  • There are hundreds of overlapping routes

    Past a few hundred arcs the map becomes a hairball. Filter, aggregate to region pairs, or switch to a flow diagram where the connections are the whole chart.

  • Precise street-level geography matters

    The basemap is a simplified world outline, not live map tiles. It suits countries and continents, not city streets.

As partes de um Arc Map

Arc
The curve for one route. Its path follows the shortest line across the globe, and its thickness or colour can encode a value.
Endpoint
The dot at each end. Endpoints shared by many routes become visible hubs, and can be sized by how many routes touch them.
Base map
The land and border outline behind the arcs. Keep it quiet; the routes are the content.
Legend
Explains arc colour, usually by category such as region or carrier.
Filter control
A dropdown or button row that isolates one group of routes at a time.
Minimap
A small globe inset showing which part of the world the main view covers after zooming.

Erros comuns em um Arc Map

Drawing everything at once

Every route at equal weight produces a tangle. Use thickness for the value and a filter for the groups.

Swapping latitude and longitude

Latitude runs north to south and comes first in most spreadsheets, but longitude is the x value. If routes land in the ocean, check the columns.

Using a loud base map

Dark country fills and heavy borders compete with the arcs. Choose a muted base so the routes carry the eye.

Reading arcs as distances

A curve's height is decoration and its width is your data. Say what thickness means in the title or legend.
