Run a bar chart race and Amazon's bar physically overtakes Apple's around 2018. You watch market share change hands instead of subtracting two numbers in your head, and that's the entire pitch behind the format. Revenue, GDP, subscriber counts: anything tracked over time becomes a bar that grows, shrinks and swaps vertical position as a short video plays, instead of four separate static charts you have to compare in your head.
That matters because ranking changes read better as motion than as a table. Nobody wants to read '2018: Apple 266, Amazon 177' next to '2021: Amazon 386, Apple 366' and do the subtraction themselves; watching Amazon's bar physically slide past Apple's, at the exact point it happened, does that work instead. The result: a spreadsheet of numbers over time becomes something people understand in five seconds, without reading a single axis label.

Date
One row per point in time, oldest first. Each remaining column is a bar.
The sheet is wide, not long: one row per time step, one column per bar. If your data currently has a separate row for every entity-and-date combination (the 'long' format spreadsheets and databases usually export), pivot it so each entity gets its own column before uploading. Most spreadsheet tools call this a pivot table.
Rows must be in chronological order, and the date column has to actually parse as a date (2024-01-01, Jan 2024, or just 2024 all work). You don't need evenly spaced intervals; quarterly data sitting next to a single annual row is fine. PlotSet interpolates between whatever rows you give it, so more rows simply means smoother, more granular motion.

Market share by company, GDP by country, subscriber counts by channel: anything where the ranking itself is the story, not just the raw numbers. If you'd tell the story out loud as 'X overtook Y in year Z,' this format is built for exactly that sentence.
Social and video content
Bar chart races are built for a feed. A 20-30 second export with a clear leader at the end works on LinkedIn, YouTube Shorts or embedded straight into a blog post, and keeping it short means the final ranking lands before anyone scrolls past.
Data with a handful of competing entities
Four to ten bars is the sweet spot: enough real jockeying for position to hold interest, not so many that the chart turns into visual noise. Past a dozen entries, the bottom half of the pack turns into an unreadable smear of thin bars nobody's tracking anyway.
Long time spans compressed into seconds
Ten years of annual data plays back in well under a minute, which is a much faster way to convey 'this took a decade' than a static line chart with ten labeled points. A viewer feels the pace of the change instead of being told about it.

A race needs jockeying to be interesting. Two bars either cross once or never do at all, and a simple line chart tells that story better while letting the reader see the exact gap at any point.
You need people to read exact values
Bars are moving, so nobody's pausing to read '307.4' off the screen. If the precise number at each step matters, export a table or a static bar chart alongside the video, not instead of it.
Your data doesn't actually have a time axis
If every row is a different category rather than a different moment, there's nothing to animate. Use a regular bar or column chart instead.
