Sankey Diagram Templates and Other Flow Charts

Five templates for showing movement instead of a snapshot: a quantity splitting across paths, a sequence narrowing to a result, or work and events laid out against a calendar. Pick the one that matches what's actually moving in your data.

关于 Graphs and flows

This page covers five ways to show something moving or changing state rather than sitting still: sankey diagrams, chord diagrams, funnel charts, timelines and Gantt charts. Most people land here searching for sankey diagram templates specifically, and that's the right template when you're tracking a quantity that splits and recombines as it moves: energy flowing from source to end use, or a budget splitting across departments and then across line items. The other four templates answer a related but different question: not what a value splits into, but how it moves through time or through a two-way relationship.

Chord diagrams are sankey's cousin for relationships that run in both directions at once: trade between countries, migration between regions, who transfers work to whom. They're arranged in a circle so an A-to-B flow and a B-to-A flow can both show without the diagram running off the page, which is exactly what a sankey's strict left-to-right layout can't do. Funnel charts strip flow down to a single narrowing path: one entry point, a handful of stages, one number at each stage that only ever goes down. Timeline and Gantt chart both plot movement through calendar time instead of a quantity moving between categories: a timeline marks events as points along one axis, a Gantt chart draws tasks as bars with a start and a length, stacked so overlapping work is visible at a glance.

None of these are diagramming tools. If you need boxes and arrows for a process map or an org chart, that's a different category of software entirely. Everything here is quantitative: every link, bar or stage carries a real number pulled from your spreadsheet, not just a label. The trade-off across the family is complexity against legibility: a sankey diagram scales the furthest, since a dozen nodes and thirty flows still reads cleanly, while a chord diagram gets cluttered past eight or nine categories and a funnel starts to feel like guesswork past six or seven stages.

最适用于

Tracking one quantity splitting across categories

Energy generation split across fuel sources and end uses, a budget allocated across departments and then line items, or site traffic splitting into a conversion and seven different exit pages. A sankey diagram is built for exactly this: one value, many paths, widths proportional to size.

Measuring drop-off through a fixed sequence

Signup to activation, checkout to purchase, application to hire. Use a funnel chart when there's one path everyone is meant to follow in order and the real question is where people fall off it, not where they branch.

Showing relationships that run both ways

Trade flows between countries, transfers between departments, calls or messages between groups. A chord diagram is the only template here built for A-to-B and B-to-A to coexist, since a sankey deliberately keeps every flow moving in one direction only.

Scheduling work or plotting events against time

A project plan with overlapping tasks needs a Gantt chart, where each bar's length is a duration and rows stack to show what runs concurrently. A sequence of one-off moments, like launches, releases or milestones, needs a timeline instead, since there's no duration to draw.

如何创建

从电子表格到已发布的图表,一步一步来。

01

Match your data shape to a template

One value branching into several: sankey. One value narrowing through stages: funnel. A relationship that runs both directions: chord. Tasks or events against dates: Gantt or timeline.

02

Open that chart's template

Each chart linked below opens with sample data already bound in, so you can see the exact column layout (source, target, value, or start and end dates) before uploading anything of your own.

03

Upload your spreadsheet

Import a CSV or Excel file, paste directly from a spreadsheet, or connect a Google Sheet so the chart updates automatically when the source data changes.

04

Publish, embed or export

Publish for an interactive embed with hover tooltips on every flow, bar or node, or export a static PNG, SVG or PDF for a deck or report.

Graphs and flows:常见问题

It depends on whether traffic actually branches. If visitors leave through several different pages or paths, use a sankey diagram so each exit shows as its own flow. If everyone is meant to follow one fixed sequence, like landing page, cart, checkout, confirmation, a funnel chart is clearer, because it's built for a single narrowing path rather than multiple branches.
