Population Pyramid Maker

Compare two groups across the same set of bands, back to back. Upload your age groups and counts, and publish an interactive population pyramid you can embed anywhere — free.

什么是 Population Pyramid?

A population pyramid is two bar charts sharing one vertical axis, drawn in opposite directions. Age bands run up the middle, one group extends left and the other right, and the outline that results describes a whole demography in a single shape: broad at the base where birth rates are high, straight-sided where they have stabilised, top-heavy where a population is ageing. The same construction works for anything split into two comparable groups across ordered bands, which is why it is also called a butterfly or tornado chart.

什么时候使用 Population Pyramid

  • You are comparing two groups across ordered bands

Male and female by age is the classic, but any two-way split over the same bins works — two years, two regions, two products across price bands.

  • The overall shape is the finding

Ageing, a birth-rate collapse, a missing generation, a bulge from one decade. These read instantly in the silhouette and are almost invisible in a table.

  • Asymmetry between the sides matters

Where one side clearly outruns the other — the widening female advantage in the oldest bands, for instance — the mirrored layout puts it right on the centre line.

  • You want to compare two populations

Two pyramids side by side, on identical scales, is one of the clearest comparisons in demography. Use percentages rather than counts so different-sized populations line up.

什么时候不该用 Population Pyramid

  • You have more than two groups

The form only has two directions. A third category has nowhere to go, and the answer is grouped bars, not a compromise.

  • Readers must compare left against right precisely

Bars growing from a shared centre in opposite directions are surprisingly hard to compare exactly. If the difference itself is the point, plot the difference.

  • The bands have no natural order

The vertical axis has to mean something sequential. Unordered categories mirrored around a centre is just a confusing bar chart.

  • You are showing change over time

A pyramid is one moment. For a trend, use a line chart of the metric you care about, or animate the pyramid across years rather than stacking snapshots.

如何制作 Population Pyramid

从电子表格到已发布的图表,一步一步来。

01

Start from the population pyramid template

Open the PlotSet population pyramid template. It loads with sample age and sex data bound so you can see the shape it expects.

02

Shape your data as band, left value, right value

One row per age band, with a column for each side. Keep the bands consistent in width — mixing five-year and ten-year bins makes the profile lie.

03

Upload or connect your data

Import a CSV or Excel file, paste from a spreadsheet, or connect a Google Sheet so the pyramid can be refreshed as new figures land.

04

Decide between counts and percentages

Counts show absolute size. Percentages of the total population show structure and let you compare two countries fairly. Say which one the axis is.

05

Publish, embed or export

Publish for a live interactive embed where hovering a band shows both values, or export a PNG, SVG or PDF.

Population Pyramid 的组成部分

Age band
One row of the pyramid, usually a five-year cohort. Band width must be constant, or wider bins will look like larger populations.
Centre axis
The shared baseline both sides grow from. It carries the band labels and is the line readers use to judge symmetry.
Left and right series
The two groups being compared. Convention puts males left and females right, and reversing it without saying so will confuse anyone familiar with the form.
Silhouette
The outline of the whole chart. Broad-based, columnar or top-heavy are the three shapes demographers read at a glance.
Notch
A band noticeably narrower than its neighbours — a war, a famine, a policy. The most interesting feature a pyramid ever shows.
Scale
Counts or share of total. Comparing two pyramids requires the same choice and the same axis limits on both.

Population Pyramid 的常见错误

Unequal age bands

A ten-year band next to five-year bands looks twice as populous when it merely covers twice the span. Keep the bins uniform or normalise by band width.

Different scales on the two sides

The whole point is a fair mirror. Independent axes make a symmetric population look lopsided and vice versa.

Comparing raw counts between countries

A large country dwarfs a small one and the age structure — the thing you wanted to compare — disappears. Switch to percentages.

Colouring by stereotype

Pink and blue add nothing and carry baggage. Any two distinguishable, colour-blind-safe hues do the job better.
