Marimekko Chart Maker

Show two dimensions of a market at once: how big each segment is, and how it splits inside. Upload your data and publish an interactive Marimekko chart you can embed anywhere — free.

什么是 Marimekko Chart?

A Marimekko chart is a stacked bar chart whose bars also vary in width. Height shows the split inside a segment, width shows how large that segment is, and the area of any block is therefore its share of the whole. That double encoding is why strategy consultants adopted it: one picture answers both "how big is this market" and "who owns it", which otherwise takes two charts and a explanation of how they relate. The name comes from the Finnish textile house whose bold blocks it resembles; the same chart is also called a Mekko, a mosaic plot, or a variable-width bar chart.

什么时候使用 Marimekko Chart

  • Segment size and segment share both matter

Market by region with each region split by competitor, or revenue by category split by channel. Neither dimension alone tells the story.

  • You are presenting a market landscape

It is the standard form in strategy work precisely because it shows where the volume is and who holds it in one frame.

  • The segments differ substantially in size

Marimekko earns its complexity when the widths are genuinely uneven. If every segment is the same size, a plain stacked bar chart says the same thing more simply.

  • You have two categorical variables and one measure

That is exactly the shape it consumes: a segment, a subdivision within it, and a value.

什么时候不该用 Marimekko Chart

  • Your audience has not seen one before

The varying width is easy to miss and easy to misread. If you cannot spend a sentence explaining it, use two charts instead.

  • Precise comparison is required

Comparing blocks that differ in both width and height is one of the harder perceptual tasks in data visualisation. Label the values you want understood.

  • There are many segments or many subdivisions

Past roughly six columns and five stacks, the blocks become slivers with nowhere to put a label.

  • You are showing change over time

It is a snapshot. Two Marimekkos side by side are very hard to compare because both dimensions move at once.

如何制作 Marimekko Chart

从电子表格到已发布的图表,一步一步来。

01

Start from the Marimekko template

Open the PlotSet Marimekko template. It loads with sample data bound so you can see how segment, subdivision and value map onto blocks.

02

Shape your data as segment, subdivision, value

One row per block. Column widths are computed from the segment totals, so you do not supply them separately — get the values right and the geometry follows.

03

Upload or connect your data

Import a CSV or Excel file, paste from a spreadsheet, or connect a Google Sheet so the chart can be refreshed later.

04

Order the columns by size

Widest first is the usual convention and it makes the chart legible immediately. Keep the stacking order identical in every column so the eye can track a series across.

05

Publish, embed or export

Publish for a live interactive embed where hovering a block shows its value and both shares, or export a PNG, SVG or PDF.

Marimekko Chart 的组成部分

Column
One top-level segment. Its width is proportional to that segment's total, which is the feature that separates a Marimekko from a stacked bar chart.
Block
One subdivision within a column. Its height is a share of the column; its area is its share of the entire chart.
Column width
Segment size. Readers routinely miss that this is encoding anything at all, so it is worth labelling the widths along the top axis.
Stack
The vertical division inside a column, always running to 100%. Keeping the stacking order constant is what lets a reader follow one series across columns.
Top axis
Cumulative segment size across the chart. Adding it turns an implied encoding into a readable one.
Area
Width times height — the block's share of the total. The quantity most readers actually want, and the one the chart states least directly.

Marimekko Chart 的常见错误

Not labelling the widths

Without a top axis or width labels, half of what the chart encodes is invisible. This is the most common failure of the form.

Changing the stacking order between columns

Sorting each column independently makes it impossible to follow a series across the chart, which destroys the comparison the chart exists for.

Too many blocks

Thin slivers cannot be labelled or compared. Group the small subdivisions into a named "other" block.

Using it when the widths are nearly equal

Then the width encodes nothing and you have paid the comprehension cost for free. A stacked bar chart is the simpler, better chart.

Marimekko Chart:常见问题

Showing the size of each segment and the composition within it at the same time — typically market size by region crossed with share by competitor.
