Qu’est-ce qu’un Funnel Chart ?

A funnel chart shows a quantity shrinking as it passes through an ordered set of stages. Each band represents the number still remaining at that step, and because every stage is a subset of the one above it, the shape narrows towards the bottom. Sales pipelines made it famous, but the form suits any strictly-narrowing process: applicants to hires, visitors to purchasers, tickets opened to tickets resolved. The value is not the picture of a funnel — it is seeing at which step the losses actually happen.

Quand utiliser un Funnel Chart

  • Every stage is a subset of the one before it

    This is the rule that makes a funnel honest. Anyone at step four must also have passed steps one to three. If that is not true, the shape is telling a lie.

  • You want to find the worst drop-off

    Laid out vertically with the counts labelled, the biggest single loss is obvious. That is usually the only number anyone acts on.

  • The stages have a fixed, meaningful order

    A process, not a set of categories. Reordering the stages should feel wrong; if it does not, use a bar chart.

  • You are presenting to a non-technical audience

    The metaphor is understood instantly, which buys you attention you can spend on the numbers rather than on explaining the chart.

  • The stages overlap or people can re-enter

    Real customer journeys loop, skip steps and restart. A funnel flattens all of that into a false straight line. When paths matter, a Sankey diagram shows them honestly.

  • You need accurate visual comparison

    The tapering shape encodes value in width, but the sloping sides add area that means nothing. Two similar stages look more different than they are. Always print the numbers.

  • You only have two stages

    That is one conversion rate. Write it as a sentence, or use two bars. A funnel with two bands is decoration.

  • The quantity does not only decrease

    If a later stage can be larger than an earlier one, the funnel cannot draw it. That is a signal your stages are not really sequential.

Start from the funnel template

Shape your data as stage and value

One row per stage, in process order: the stage name and the count still remaining at it. Order in the file is the order in the chart, so sort before you upload.

Label the drop, not just the level

Showing both the count at each stage and the percentage lost getting there is what turns the chart into a finding. The step with the biggest loss is the story.

Stage
One step in the process, drawn as a horizontal band. Stages read top to bottom in the order they happen.
Band width
Proportional to the count remaining at that stage. Width is the only thing carrying the value, which is why the labels matter so much.
Stage-to-stage conversion
The percentage of the previous stage that survived to this one. The most useful number on the chart and the one most often left off.
Overall conversion
The bottom stage as a share of the top. Useful as a headline, useless for diagnosis on its own.
Drop-off
What was lost between two stages. Some funnels draw it explicitly beside the taper, which makes the loss impossible to skim past.
Taper
The sloping edge between bands. Purely connective — it encodes nothing, and reading area into it is the classic misinterpretation.

Stages that are not nested

Counting everyone who visited pricing and everyone who started a trial as consecutive stages, when some trials never saw pricing, produces a funnel that cannot be reconciled. Define each stage as a strict subset first.

Leaving the numbers off

Without labels the reader is asked to compare tapering shapes by eye, which is exactly what this chart is worst at. Print the counts and the conversion rates.

Too many stages

Past about six bands each one is too thin to read and the chart becomes a gradient. Group the minor steps and keep the ones you could actually change.

Using it for a breakdown

Sorting unrelated categories by size and drawing them as a funnel implies a process that does not exist. That is a sorted bar chart wearing a costume.
