什么是 Pie Fight？
An animated pie chart plays out exactly this: Android's slice of the phone market climbs from 44% to 71% between 2012 and 2020 while iOS's shrinks to make room, and you watch the trade happen instead of comparing two screenshots. Each slice is a share of a whole, a platform's install base, a company's budget, a category of spending, and its angle grows or shrinks as you move from one row of data to the next. PlotSet's version of this, called Pie Fight, turns those shifts into a short video: slices swell, shrink and swap dominance in front of the viewer instead of sitting there as one static image.
The format only works when the parts genuinely add up to a whole. That's what separates it from a bar chart race, where each bar can grow on its own and the total doesn't matter. A pie fight forces every category to compete for the same fixed space: if one slice gets bigger, something else has to get smaller, and watching that tradeoff happen is the actual point of the video. It reads well with two competing categories (iOS vs Android) or three to six; past that, the smallest slices shrink into slivers nobody can read.
PlotSet renders this from a plain spreadsheet: one column per slice, one row per point in time, and interpolates the motion between rows the same way it does for a bar chart race. A handful of rows is enough to get real movement; more rows just make the transitions smoother.

Date
One row per point in time, oldest first. Each remaining column is a slice.
The Date column is the clock the whole animation runs on: one row per point in time, oldest first, and it needs to actually parse as a date (2024-01-01, Jan 2024, or just 2024 all work). Every other column becomes one slice of the pie, and its header is what shows up as that slice's label, so name your columns the way you'd want them read on screen.
You don't need the row totals to land exactly on 100 (PlotSet works out each slice's angle from the values it's given), but the numbers should represent real parts of the same whole, or the pie stops meaning anything. Four rows is enough to show real movement; six to ten spaced-out snapshots (every few years for a decade-long trend, say) makes for a fuller, more satisfying race without padding the video out.

Budget or spending composition
Where a department's budget goes, how a household splits its spending, how a portfolio is allocated. The pie forces the categories to visibly trade space with each other as priorities shift.
Two to six competing categories
This is the sweet spot for a pie. Fewer than two and there's nothing to fight over; more than six and the smallest slices become unreadable slivers before the video even gets interesting.
Short, feed-ready content
A 15-20 second render with a clean ending ranking works well dropped into a LinkedIn post, a YouTube short or embedded in an article. People get the shift without reading a single number.

More than six or seven categories
Past that point the smallest wedges are too thin to read and the animation turns into a blur of color rather than a story. Group the long tail into an 'Other' column, or switch to a bar chart race, which handles more entities gracefully.
Columns that don't add up to a meaningful whole
If your numbers aren't parts of the same total at each point in time, say, independent revenue figures for unrelated companies, a pie misrepresents the relationship. Use Race Bar or Race Column instead; they don't assume the values sum to anything.
Readers need exact percentages
A moving wedge is great for showing that Android pulled ahead of iOS, but nobody's pausing the video to read '71.4%' off an angle. Pair the video with a table or static chart if precise figures matter.
