PlotSet 与 PowerPoint：实话实说

PowerPoint's own charts come out of the same engine as Excel's, which means they are fine for a bar chart and awkward for anything else. Once you want a map, a sankey, a treemap or a chart carrying your own type and palette, you end up fighting a dialog box. PlotSet is where you build the chart; PowerPoint is where it lands. For the slide itself you export a vector image that stays sharp when it hits a projector, and for anything the deck links out to — a follow-up page, a shared report, an internal wiki — you publish the interactive version and link to that.

Bring your numbers into PlotSet

Paste the range straight from Excel or Google Sheets, or upload a CSV or .xlsx file. Column types are detected on the way in, so dates stay dates and formatted numbers stay numbers.

Pick a template that fits the point of the slide

Around 300 of them, including choropleth and symbol maps, sankey diagrams, treemaps and bump charts — the formats a deck usually has to make do without.

Match it to your deck's theme

Set the palette, fonts and number formatting on the chart so it agrees with the template you present in. Doing it once on the chart beats recolouring series by hand on every slide.

Size it for a slide before you export

A 16:9 chart dropped onto a 16:9 slide needs no cropping and no stretching. Set the canvas to the aspect ratio of your deck while you are still in the editor.

Export SVG for the slide

Insert → Pictures → This Device, and choose the SVG. PowerPoint keeps it as a vector, so it stays crisp when the deck is projected, printed or zoomed. Use PNG only where you need a fixed rendering, and PDF when the chart is going into a printed handout.

Publish and link for the interactive version

Publishing gives the chart a live URL and an embed snippet. Hyperlink a slide element to that URL, or put the embed on the page the deck sends people to, and your audience gets the tooltips and the full data the slide had no room for.

  • Vector output that survives a projector

    SVG stays sharp at any size. A screenshot of a chart is the single most common reason a slide looks soft in the room, and exporting properly removes it.

  • Chart types PowerPoint does not offer

    Maps of 119 geographies, sankey diagrams, treemaps, marimekko, bump charts, animated bar chart races. None of them exist in the native chart picker.

  • The chart matches your brand, not Office's

    Your fonts, your palette, your number formats, set on the chart and applied everywhere it is used — the deck, the report and the web page all agree.

  • Update the data without rebuilding the slide

    Re-upload the rows, re-export, and replace the picture. The styling is a property of the chart, so nothing has to be redone.

  • One chart, two audiences

    The same chart exports as a still for the deck and publishes as a live embed for the link — so the people who want to dig in can, without the slide getting busier.

它做不到什么

  • The slide gets a picture, not a live chart

    PowerPoint cannot render an iframe on a slide, so the interactive version lives on the web and the deck holds an image of it. That is a real limit, and the workaround is a link rather than an embed.

  • The image does not update itself

    Change the data and you export again and replace the picture on the slide. There is no link between the file on the slide and the chart it came from.

  • Animated formats have to be recorded

    A bar chart race is a video, not a still. Export it as MP4 and insert it as media if you want the motion on the slide.

  • Complex SVGs can be heavy

    A county-level map is thousands of paths, and a deck with several of them gets slow to scroll on older machines. Export those as high-resolution PNG instead.

Export the chart as SVG, then in PowerPoint use Insert → Pictures → This Device and select the file. It arrives as a vector image that scales without going soft. PNG and PDF exports work the same way.
