什么是 Dumbbell Chart?

A dumbbell chart plots two dots per category and joins them with a line. The dots are the two values — before and after, men and women, 2019 and 2024 — and the connecting line is the difference between them. That line is the whole idea: it turns a comparison the reader would otherwise have to compute into something they can see and rank at a glance. Compared with a grouped bar chart showing the same data, it uses a fraction of the ink, fits far more categories on a screen, and puts the emphasis exactly where it belongs.

什么时候使用 Dumbbell Chart

  • You have exactly two values per category

Before and after, actual against target, two years, two groups. Two is what the form is built for, and it does that case better than anything else.

  • The gap is what you want noticed

Sorting by the size of the gap turns the chart into a ranked answer to "where did the most change happen", which is usually the real question.

  • You have many categories

Thirty rows of dumbbells stay readable where sixty grouped bars would not. It is the most space-efficient two-value comparison there is.

  • The values do not need a zero baseline

Dots encode position, not length, so the axis can start where the data does. That makes small differences in large numbers visible without lying.

什么时候不该用 Dumbbell Chart

  • You have three or more values per category

A third dot removes the clear before-and-after reading. At that point use a slope chart, a line chart or small multiples.

  • The totals or magnitudes matter

A dumbbell shows position and difference, not quantity. If the reader needs to feel how big the numbers are, bars from zero do that better.

  • The two values are nearly identical everywhere

Overlapping dots and invisible lines. Check the spread first; if there is barely a gap, the finding is "nothing changed" and a sentence says it faster.

  • Direction of change flips unpredictably

If some categories rose and others fell, a plain dumbbell hides which is which. Encode direction with colour or use an arrow, or readers will assume all change went one way.

如何制作 Dumbbell Chart

从电子表格到已发布的图表,一步一步来。

01

Start from the connected dots template

Open the PlotSet connected dots template. It loads with sample data bound so you can see how two value columns become a pair of dots and a line.

02

Shape your data as category, value one, value two

One row per category with both values on the same row. That layout is what lets the template draw the connector.

03

Upload or connect your data

Import a CSV or Excel file, paste from a spreadsheet, or connect a Google Sheet so the chart can be refreshed later.

04

Sort by the gap

This is the step that makes the chart. Sorting by difference rather than by name or by value produces an immediate ranking of where change was largest.

05

Publish, embed or export

Publish for a live interactive embed where hovering shows both values and the difference, or export a PNG, SVG or PDF.

Dumbbell Chart 的组成部分

Dot pair
The two values for one category. Give them clearly different colours, because which dot is which is the first thing a reader needs to know.
Connector
The line joining the pair. Its length is the difference, and it is the only element encoding that difference directly.
Category axis
One row per category, usually horizontal so long labels read normally. Its order is a deliberate choice, not a default.
Value axis
Shared by both dots. It does not need to start at zero, because nothing here encodes value as length.
Direction
Whether the second value is above or below the first. Colouring the connector by direction is what stops a mixed chart being misread.
Gap label
The difference printed at the end of the connector. Optional, but it converts a visual impression into a number worth quoting.

Dumbbell Chart 的常见错误

Sorting alphabetically

It scatters the large gaps through the chart and hides the ranking that makes a dumbbell worth drawing. Sort by gap, or by one of the two values.

Not saying which dot is which

Two colours with no legend, or a legend far from the dots, makes the chart ambiguous. Label the first and last rows directly if you can.

Using one colour for both dots

The chart then shows a range rather than a change, and the reader cannot tell which end came first.

Adding a third value

It stops being a dumbbell and starts being an unlabelled slope chart. Switch form deliberately rather than by accretion.

Dumbbell Chart:常见问题

Comparing two values for each of many categories and emphasising the gap between them — change over time, gaps between groups, or actual against target.
